Workshops – 2026

In these one-day workshops we will explore the Alexander Technique as a practical investigation into coordination, perception, and the organisation of activity. Rather than understanding action as a sequence of separate steps, we will investigate how the whole person is already organising in relation to gravity, environment, and intention before visible movement occurs.

Observation will be a central element of the day. As Erika Whittaker said, speaking of Alexander’s discovery in her Keynote Address at the Brighton Congress in 1988:

“Observation had to be his procedure for a long time.
He reached a point of observation not influenced by past knowledge.
He was not deciding what he was looking for.
It is important that we keep this process in mind.”

The work will be practical throughout. Through walking, speaking, hands-on work, and guided activity, we will explore how habitual reactions and fixed ways of thinking rapidly narrow coordination, and how a different quality of attention can allow more ease and fluidity in both mind and body. We will explore direction not as something mechanically imposed, but as a form of elastic organisation within gravity, and inhibition not as inserting a stop in time and space, but as allowing organisation to remain open a moment longer.

Alongside the practical work, we will also explore ways of describing the Alexander Technique that connect more clearly with current understanding in movement research, perception, and coordination — while remaining grounded in direct experience.

These workshops are for anyone interested in exploring how a fresh approach to coordination and activity — one that sees control as “in process and not superimposed” — can bring greater fluidity, responsiveness, and freedom to both mind and body.
